While Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) and two of his brothers (Ward Bond and Tim Holt) are away at Tombstone, their cattle are stolen and their youngest brother is killed. To track down the rustlers, Wyatt is sworn in as marshal at Tombstone. One day, the clean-cut and graceful Clementine (Cathy Downs) appears to find the infamous gunman Doc Holliday (Victor Mature). Wyatt is instantly attracted to her. (A clumsy and self-conscious Wyatt taking Clementine to a dance is a heartwarming scene.)
The relentless rancher Clanton (Walter Brennan) and his four villainous sons are regular visitors to the town. The enmity between the Earps and the Clantons culminates in the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Coral. In this classic Western, John Ford takes considerable liberties with historical fact, and his film has helped Wyatt to earn great fame as a frontier marshal who fights for law and order.
