I watched this film a few years after it had won the Oscar for best film, and I must say I was a bit disappointed. I like westerns, I like the moral stories which go along with them, and the fact that often the good guy isn't all that good, and the bad guy isn't just bad. This movie, although admirably filling out the key concepts of a good western; i.e. revenge and redemption, didn't quite keep my attention for the entire movie. Well acted and nicely shot, as we all expect from a Clint Eastwood directed movie, it's pace seemed a bit sluggish and the plot didn't particularly appeal to me. Perhaps the Academy Awards wanted to revive the lost appeal of the western at this time, otherwise, I can't quite see why it won best picture. A good movie, but not a great western.
