A John Wayne western. Everyone should see at least one John Wayne western in their life (Stagecoach is another good choice), but I know for a fact that John Wayne is not for everyone. He is an actor who often looks, sounds, and feels as though he weren't acting at all and it can be quite jarring on the screen. Perhaps you have to grow up with him, or have a grandfather who loves him, to truly appreciate the man, the actor John Wayne. This is one of his best performances and the story really makes him shine. A man, a cowboy put into action a bit out of obligation and morals, but more because he can and something in his bones tells him he has to. As the title suggests, he is searching, searching for his past and his future in the beautiful desert. Not a lot of action, this is more of a slow-ride through the desert that brings the characters fully to life and makes you want to spend your time riding alongside them.

プロットはフォードの他の作品より複雑だが、ウェインのｲｰサンは｢赤い河｣のダンソンに負ける。しかい、ｲｰサンであろう、ダンソンであろう、ウェインの全てのキャラクタたちが、actorとしてのウェインのスタイルに左右された。セルフのしゃべり方やしぐさや表情までもウェイン流だと感じられた。ウェインの演技は残念だと思わせる。といっても、この作には収蔵する価値があると思う。
