King Richard of England is away at the Crusades. Back in England, Prince John conspires with Knight Templar Bois-Guilbert and other nobles to usurp the throne. The Prince hosts a tournament at Ashby, in which an anonymous knight (Steven Waddington) emerges victorious. But the knight collapses just as he is receiving the winner's garland from Lady Rowena (Victoria Smurfit).
This is a TV drama version of Sir Walter Scott's famous historical novel. The cast of the 1997 BBC serial pales in comparison with the star-studded cast of the 1952 Hollywood movie, which starred Robert Taylor as Ivanhoe, Joan Fontaine as Rowena and Elizabeth Taylor as Rebecca. However, excellent characterization and well-chosen settings make the six-part TV adaptation no less enjoyable.
