Magic School Bus
One of the best-selling children`s science series`, The story text is at once humorous, engaging, and packed with information, further amplified by short "reports" by the students in the book. My five-year-old enjoys the lively pictures and entertaining comments provided in cartoon bubbles. Ms Frizzle is an amazing teacher, who sports and equally amazing wardrobe. She challenges her students and leads them on unbelievable field trips.
This trip, like many of the Frizz`s expeditions, takes the kids to a place where they least expected to go: inside a functioning human body (kind of like that movie with Rachel Welch and Donald Pleasance)-- specifically, Arnold`s body. Certainly he is equally unaware of his classmates` whereabouts as he gulps down the miniaturized bus along with his "cheesey weezies" and makes his way back to school alone, he thinks; with encouragement from a talking bird. [We do sometimes wonder why birds and radios (from INSIDE A HURRICANE) talk but Liz the class` horned lizard does not.] Unlike INSIDE RALPHIE, which deals more specifically with the immune system, this takes us through the whole human body. For more information, Joanna Cole also has a more detailed book about the body for children, YOUR INSIDES, illustrated by Paul Meisel, which includes overlays.
